23 year old lightweight fighter and G4S 4teen boxer Charly Suarez took the Southeast Asian Games by storm, winning the Filipino team their third gold medal of the tournament.
Charly easily fought his way through the early rounds of the tournament to make the semi-finals, where he faced favoured Thai opponent Ardee Saylom, who has already earned a place at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Charly battled through in a close match that ended with him just edging the victory, 11-9.
In the final Charly faced one of the event’s hometown heroes, Indonesian Matius Madiangan, who had the crowd behind him. Despite this, Charly won all three rounds, beating him 26-7 and with two standing counts.
It is Charly’s second straight gold medal at the event, having topped the featherweight class in the 2009 Laos Games two years ago.
