In addition to its silver level sponsorship of Skandia Team GBR, G4S is also a proud supporter of two of the team’s most promising crews in the 49er class. Often called the ‘Formula One of the sea’, the 49er is one of the most exhilarating and fast moving of all of the Olympic classes, providing exciting racing over short courses. It has been an Olympic class since 2000 having made its debut at the Sydney Games.
With a huge sail area (consisting of mainsail, jib and asymmetric spinnaker), twin trapezes and an ultra light hull, the 49er can reach up to 30 knots in speed. The boat requires a two-man crew to have a high level of agility and athleticism as they must make rapid, and often acrobatic, movements.
G4S’s very own highly experienced and internationally decorated crews are the 49er duos of Stevie Morrison; Ben Rhodes and Chris Draper; Peter Greenhalgh. These two crews have a monumental amount of experience and success at the highest echelons of their sport, including multiple world titles, three Olympic appearances and an Olympic bronze medal. Competition for places at London 2012 however is fierce and both boats will be pushing hard for inclusion, in what is one of the most agile and athletic classes around.
