Medals for the G4S 49ers in Palma
5 April 2010
Thursday saw the French duo of Manu Dyen and Stephane Christidis near enough seal the gold medal, which meant that Friday became a straight contest between G4S sponsored 49ers Chris Draper and Peter Greenhalgh and Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes for the silver and bronze medals.
As predicted, the French 49ers secured the gold medal on Friday, however the battle for the remaining podium spots was between the G4S 49ers continued, with Stevie and Ben having the upper hand going in to the final race.
However, Peter and Chris manoeuvred well at the start of the race, placing Stevie and Ben on the unfavourable side of the course, and themselves to the favoured side. They retained the advantage from then on to finish the medal race in third to claim silver. Stevie and Ben took bronze.
“We’re over the moon,” said Chris of his and Peter’s first podium finish together since joining forces just over a year ago. “We’ve changed a lot of the way we go about doing things, and basically are just trying to get better as a team. We’re a young team together, so we’re really pleased that things are moving forwards.”
This was a strong showing from the G4S 49ers, and with it still being early in the season, there is great promise of more medals in the upcoming regattas, following their early success.
